The Charger R/T (Road/Track) was introduced in 1968 as a high-performance version of the redesigned Charger, which featured a sleek, fastback body with hidden headlights and a full-width taillight. The R/T came standard with a 375-horsepower 440 Magnum V8, but for an extra $712, you could opt for the optional 426 Street Hemi, which delivered 425 horsepower and 490 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Hemi engine was a masterpiece of engineering, with hemispherical combustion chambers, dual 4-barrel carburetors, solid-lifter camshaft, forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and dual exhausts. The Hemi also required heavy-duty components to handle its power, such as a Dana 60 rear axle with Sure Grip limited-slip differential, heavy-duty suspension, power front disc brakes, and 15-inch black steel wheels with redline tires.
